Holy Spirit, You Are Welcome Here

Warm summer air swirled with a soft ribbon of distant music. Waltzing its way through the residential blocks, out of view, the bagpiper’s notes of “Amazing Grace” became more distinct and richer as he strolled nearer. The moving melody offered a gentle but royal welcome to the Holy Spirit while we gathered to celebrate Dick Stepp’s life.

The presence of the Lord lovingly wove through every open heart, offering comfort as we each simultaneously held joy and sorrow. While the last notes of the old familiar hymn trailed off in the breeze, words from friends and family entered the sacred space.

Story after story recounted the same theme. Every single time Dick prayed with a group or individual, he invited the Holy Spirit in. Long before the song “Holy Spirit, You Are Welcome Here” became popular, Dick welcomed the Holy Spirit through prayer as an honored guest.

I was cognizant reframing was happening in my heart as I listened. Each story strengthened my desire. I knew without a doubt the Holy Spirit called me to embrace the holy practice of welcoming His presence.

The calendar pages of almost two decades have turned since my heart’s awakening that warm summer evening. Emulating Dick’s example, I continue to welcome the Holy Spirit with great joy during prayer.

Dick’s earthly breath ceased, yet his inspiration still breathes life. His legacy invites each of us to become welcomers. Like the bagpiper’s melody of “Amazing Grace,” Dick’s song of welcome waltzes on, offering a joy-filled invitation for everyone to experience the Holy Spirit.

What stories are you writing with your life?

Does your life point to the Lord in ways that inspire others to emulate?

Now the Lord is the Spirit,

and where the Spirit of the Lord is,

there is freedom.

2 Corinthians 3:17

Dear Heavenly Father, Lord Jesus, Holy Spirit,

We welcome your presence. I pray you will reframe hearts with Dick’s example as you did mine. May we become new creations that bring you honor and glory as we welcome your Spirit into our prayers and lives.

In the name of Jesus,

Amen
